Joe starred as a player at the University of Illinois and was captain of the team from 1939 to 1942. After college he played with the Fond du Lac Bears, and the Milwaukee Luicks. He later played with the Milwaukee Flyers in the Wisconsin-Michigan-Ontario League (1950-51).
